Honorary Professor of Demography at Sapienza University of Rome; Awarded the "Laureate2012" title by the IUSSP (International Union for the Scientific Study of Population) in Stockholm; Honorary President of the European Association for Population Studies (EAPS). Emeritus Editor of GENUS-International Journal of Population.
Author of 30 books, including 3 published in Italian and 27 in English or French, comprising 12 as sole author and 28 as author and/or editor. She is co-author and editor of the Treatise of Demography, titled Demography Analysis and Synthesis, with four volumes published in English by Academic Press-Elsevier and eight volumes published in French by INED/Paris. Prolific author of numerous articles published in International Journals of demography, statistics, history, economics, epidemiology, medicine, biology, gerontology, etc.
Recent research focuses on Population longevity and ageing, health, and survival of the elderly and oldest old, centenarian, and semi-super-centenarian studies, and longitudinal studies of Sardinian longevity.
