Miguel González-Leonardo

Miguel González-Leonardo holds a Ph.D. Cum Laude in Demography from the Centre for Demographic Studies and the Autonomous University of Barcelona, and participated in the European Doctoral School of Demography 2019-20. He is an Assistant Professor at the Centre for Demographic, Urban and Environmental Studies within El Colegio de México, Nacional Researcher Level II in the SNII Program of CONAHCYT, and Guest Researcher in the Department of Geography and Planning at the University of Liverpool, UK. Previously, he worked as a Research Scholar in the Population and Just Societies Program of the International Institute for Applied System Analysis, Austria. He carried out research stays in the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, Chile, at the Geographic Data Science Lab of the University of Liverpool, UK, and at the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research, Germany.

His research focuses on human mobility, internal and international migration, and population change at national and subnational levels. Miguel's work can be read in high-ranked international journals, such as: Demography; Population, Space and Place; International Migration Review; Population Studies; Demographic Research; Journal of Rural Studies; Geographical Analysis; or Humanities and Social Sciences Communications. He has been principal investigator in projects funded by the United Nations and El Colegio de México, and working team member in projects of the European Union, the Spanish Government, and Research England.

Miguel has held editorial roles in the scientific journals: Population, Space and Place; Journal of the Royal Statistical Society: Series A; Journal of Regional Research; Journal of Demographic and Urban Studies; and AGER. He received the Best Ph.D. Dissertation Award from the Autonomous University of Barcelona, and the Young Researcher Award from the Spanish Regional Science Association in 2022, the Best International Article Award from the Spanish Geographical Association, and the Top Cited Article Award from the journal Population, Space and Place in 2023.
