Focus on Partnerships: Discourses on cohabitation and marriage throughout Europe and Australia
Published 02 October 2015
This Special Collection of Demographic Research – edited by Brienna Perelli-Harris and Laura Bernardi – presents the findings from a collaborative project that employed focus group research to better understand cohabitation and marriage in Europe and Australia. The authors conducted 7-8 focus groups in small-medium cities in each of the 9 participating countries using a standardized questionnaire. Discussions were coded, analyzed, and summarized in a country report. Authors wrote a country-specific chapter focusing on particularly relevant themes in their location, as well as an overview paper that synthesized the overall findings of the project. The articles provide insights into the meanings of partnership formation in each country and reflect on theoretical themes such as 1) lifecourses, sequencing, and intersections; 2) individualization, freedom and commitment; and 3) culture, religion, and the persistence of the past. Taken together, this Special Collection contributes to and challenges current explanations for family change by pointing out how social norms shape partnership behavior.
